Reading Corner

You've found a spot to sit and read! I like to read science fiction, fantasy, and a mix of other things. I track my reading on the social booktracking app Bookworm Reads (Me: @roboreck). I'll also keep track of books I've read on this shelf here!

Summarizing all my ideas and thoughts on each of my favorite books is intimidating! I haven't finished writing these yet :)

Project Hail Mary

Andy Weir

Project Hail Mary

Stupendous space adventure exploring the coolest science in the most exciting ways. This is the book most like Outer Wilds to me, and I will always revisit it! After my second read, I say with certainty it's one of my favorite books. Stories told through science and science told through stories is particularly beautiful and Weir does it eloquently. This exceeds expectations set by The Martian, and will be a staple Science Fiction novel for the following decades.

AND A SPOILER WARNING FOR THIS NEXT PART:

I love optical sciences, so I really liked how they described interactions between matter and light in this book, especially when they acknowledge that objects smaller than the wavelength of light you are considering don't interact with that light. This is science Andy Weir is aware of, but 1) has Dr Grace handle a *nano*-needle (~50 nm diameter) under a 10000x optical microscope with HIS BARE HANDS- visible light wouldn't interact with the needle and make it obvious and humans definitely do not have the precision to poke around at nanometer accuracy and 2) Eridians do have the capability to observe light through cameras, but how in the world do they know microbes exist? The microbes relevant to this book are ~10 micrometers across and smaller than the smallest determinable wavelength of sound on Earth, how would they even know to look (with an accurate microscope setup and cameras) for them?

The Lost Years of Merlin

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Jules Verne

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

An undersea adventure cataloging the imagined culture of an intelligent, rich submarine crew and the creatures that inhabit our oceans, with some creative liberties. I love these characters!

I read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at a time when I felt myself drowning. Captain Nemo's Nautilus offered me a place to rest and imagine a life lived learning and exploring for the sake of it. I need it :)

This was really fun!

The Book of Merlyn

T.H. White

The Book of Merlyn

What forms as a supplemental finale to the story of King Arthur as told by T.H. White really acts as an exploration in of morality in any time. The cast of characters spans from woodland creature we know and love from the Sword in the Stone to Merlyn himself. All of whom offer opinions and perspectives on various moral conflicts and whereabouts the world is heading.

Where I found comfort and joy in the escapades of Arthur and his friends in The Once and Future King, here I found engaging, passionate discussion from animals of our world about what it means to be good. White expresses his disparagement for violence and discusses how abhorrent it is that members of the same species would kill each other. I'd reccomend this book if you like Merlyn's character as written by White, and I believe it serves as a good afterlife to The Once and Future King.

I'll add more books as I read them!
Go read something!
